Intel is introducing Starfire, a radiation-hardened processor designed for satellites that can handle AI and data processing workloads in the harsh space environment. The company's Government Technologies unit developed the chip internally and expects initial customer availability by year-end, according to Sean O'Neill, deputy director of product development. The move reflects Intel's bet that growing U.S. emphasis on space as critical infrastructure, combined with expanding commercial satellite constellations, justifies adapting modern commercial semiconductor technology for orbit.

Starfire uses a system-on-chip architecture that integrates a central processor with graphics, neural, and image processing capabilities in a single package, reducing size, weight and power requirements compared to traditional satellite computers with separate chips. Intel is offering two versions: a low-power model consuming under 10 watts and a higher-performance variant. The processor is designed for missions lasting over a decade and incorporates hardware and software features to mitigate radiation effects, though Intel is still completing radiation qualification testing, with results expected by end of Q3.

Intel faces established competitors including BAE Systems, Microchip, and AMD, all developing advanced space processors. The company differentiates itself partly through domestic supply chain strategy: while suppliers manufacture individual components overseas, Intel assembles, screens and qualifies all components at its Chandler, Arizona facilities to space-grade standards. O'Neill said this approach aims to shorten lead times compared to existing space processors, where component shortages frequently delay satellite programs. The strategy aligns with federal push to expand domestic semiconductor manufacturing, including recent Trump administration investment in Intel.

Intel is in discussions with multiple U.S. government agencies about flying Starfire on an experimental mission later this year, though no demonstration has been confirmed. The company positions the processor for any spacecraft type but sees small satellites as an early market. O'Neill said Starfire can handle routine spacecraft functions like telemetry and command sequencing alongside AI tasks including image analytics, object detection and anomaly detection. Intel has signed partnership agreements with government organizations and channel partners but has not yet identified prospective customers publicly.
