KBR announced July 21 that it is reorganizing its defense business units to compete for contracts on Golden Dome, the Trump administration's planned multilayered missile and aerial defense system. The Houston-based contractor assigned two senior executives to lead the effort and is increasing internal spending on modeling, simulation, prototyping and secure test facilities. KBR is one of hundreds of companies selected for the Missile Defense Agency's SHIELD contract vehicle, which the agency will use to issue task orders for Golden Dome and related programs. The company aims to pursue engineering and systems integration work connecting satellites, sensors, communications networks, command-and-control software and interceptors across military services and federal agencies.
KBR identified specific areas where it plans to compete: data integration, modeling and simulation, threat analysis, space-based sensing, counter-drone systems and directed energy. The contractor promoted Daniel Dant, a 26-year Air Force veteran and former commander of the 460th Space Wing, to vice president of strategic initiatives to lead Golden Dome pursuit. Jay Lennon, president of KBR's Mission Technology Solutions division and a 25-year Air Force veteran, will oversee the company's Golden Dome strategy.
Golden Dome remains a concept under development by the Trump administration, with no final architecture or procurement schedule yet disclosed. The system is expected to combine multiple sensors and interceptor systems from various contractors rather than relying on a single supplier, which aligns with KBR's positioning around systems integration and test infrastructure.
KBR's increased investment in modeling, simulation and classified facilities signals confidence that Golden Dome will generate sizable contract opportunities over time. The company's focus on integration work rather than hardware development reflects the reality that orchestrating multiple suppliers' systems across military commands will be essential to making the layered defense operational.
