NASA is accelerating assembly and testing of hardware for Artemis III, targeting a mid-to-late 2027 launch of four astronauts aboard Orion. At Kennedy Space Center, the Space Launch System rocket is taking shape with the core stage already in the Vehicle Assembly Building and connected to its engine block as of May. Four RS-25 engines will be installed once deliveries complete, followed by integration with the mobile launch platform. Solid rocket booster segments have arrived and are being mounted, while the Orion spacecraft's heat shield installation is complete -- the first upgraded design incorporating lessons from Artemis I's unexpected heat shield wear. Mission control teams have begun monthly launch simulations covering propellant loading, terminal count procedures, and launch day operations, with testing to continue regularly through 2027.
