Poland has committed roughly $745 million to the EU's IRIS² satellite internet constellation project, financing the construction of six MEO and six LEO satellites as part of a broader European effort to secure governmental communications and close connectivity gaps. The Polish Space Agency announced the investment, equivalent to 2.8 billion Polish złoty, during a July 21 ceremony in Warsaw attended by EU Commissioner Andrius Kubilius and Poland's Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński. Officials framed the participation as strengthening Poland's security infrastructure and opening business opportunities for the country's 400-plus space companies.

IRIS² is designed to comprise 292 satellites across multiple orbits: 18 in MEO, 264 in higher LEO, and 10 in lower LEO. The constellation aims to provide secure governmental communications while delivering high-speed broadband to underserved areas and interconnecting with terrestrial 5G and 6G networks. The EU positions IRIS² as its direct answer to SpaceX's Starlink and describes it as the bloc's first public-private partnership focused on satellite-based secure connectivity serving all 27 member states.

Poland's investment reflects expanding ambitions in the space sector. The country will increase its ESA budget contribution to 731 million euros annually between 2026 and 2028. Officials also plan to establish a state-run fund worth over 500 million złoty to invest in emerging space companies domestically. These steps come shortly after Poland was selected to host the first ESA civil security center in an eastern flank EU member state, opening in Warsaw.

The timing underscores Poland's strategic pivot toward space capabilities amid broader European defense concerns. Kierwiński characterized the IRIS² participation as strengthening Poland's position as a reliable partner while generating growth opportunities across the domestic space industry. Kubilius noted that secure satellite communications represent a key priority as the EU develops new space infrastructure independent of external providers.
