QOSMIC raised $3.33 million in seed funding led by Accel and Prosus to build optical ground stations that receive laser downlinks from satellites and orbital data centers. The startup addresses a critical bottleneck as computing shifts into orbit: radio frequency links max out at 1-2 Gbps, while the growing volume of data generated by orbital processors demands terabit-scale downlink capacity. QOSMIC's optical ground stations operate at 10 Gbps today with a path to 100 Gbps, and the company is building its infrastructure as neutral, vendor-agnostic hardware available to the broader space ecosystem.
In less than a year since founding, QOSMIC validated its full optical chain over a 10-kilometer terrestrial link and reached TRL6, preparing for an in-orbit demonstration. The company is co-designing optical communication terminals with TakeMe2Space, an orbital data center operator, and developing inter-satellite optical links. QOSMIC's ground stations can download hundreds of gigabytes per satellite pass at roughly $1 per gigabyte, compared to $3-17 per gigabyte from commercial RF operators, and the tight optical beam footprint also provides inherent security against interception.
