SpaceX launched 21 satellites for the Space Force's Space Development Agency on July 16 from Vandenberg Space Force Base, restarting deployment of the Pentagon's military data network after a months-long pause. The York Space Systems satellites are the third batch of Tranche 1 Transport Layer spacecraft for the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture, designed to support missile warning, tracking, and military data relay across low Earth orbit. The pause stemmed from hardware and software issues on the first 42 satellites, including thermal modeling problems, ground contact delays, and propulsion challenges.
With this mission, SDA now has 63 Tranche 1 Transport Layer satellites on orbit -- half the planned 126-satellite constellation. SDA Director Gurpartap Sandhoo said the agency is shifting from monthly launch cadence to a readiness-based model, coordinating launches around spacecraft checkout and integration testing rather than launch availability. Sandhoo noted that with three orbital planes deployed, SDA can begin offering "real capability for the warfighter," though the agency has not yet established the mesh network needed to route data across the full constellation and plans to build optical links within planes before attempting cross-plane connections.
